The Philippines and the United Arab Emirates have applied to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) 12-nation trade bloc, according to Japanese government sources.
The Philippines and the UAE submitted application documents in August to New Zealand, which serves as the agreement's administrative hub, the officials said. The two applications mark the first since Indonesia's in September 2024.
As the U.S.-China economic clash spreads protectionism worldwide, the CPTPP is emerging as a bulwark for free trade alongside Europe.
